1k.

A daily writing practice

A thousand words a day. Then a full stop.

1k is a quiet room for one page a day. Write until the counter reaches a thousand. A single vermilion full stop marks the day as done, and the rest of the day is yours.

A page of one thousand short strokes, one per word, ending in a vermilion full stop.
The Thousand: every finished day becomes a page of 1,000 strokes, one per word you wrote.

How it works

  1. Open today’s page.

One page per day, already waiting. No folders, no titles, no blank-document decisions. Just begin anywhere.

  2. Write a thousand words.

A slim counter at the foot of the page tracks your progress. About three book pages, roughly thirty to forty-five minutes.

  3. Get your full stop.

At the thousandth word a single full stop appears and the day joins your year. gg: good going, done for today.

Try the page.

Type a few lines. Nothing here is saved or sent anywhere. It only shows how the counter and the Thousand respond to your words.

0 / 1,000

The year, in full stops.

Every finished day becomes a dot. Days you didn’t write stay open circles: never red, never shamed. Missed a day? Start again. The page doesn’t mind.

Stays on your device

Pages are saved in your browser’s own storage (IndexedDB). There is no server, no account and no analytics. We never see a word.

Yours to take

Export everything as Markdown or a JSON backup at any time, and import it on another device. Plain files, no lock-in.

Nothing to win

No badges, confetti, leaderboards or “streak lost!” alarms. Just the work, a count, and a full stop when you’re done.

Questions

Why a thousand words?

It is long enough to get past the warm-up and into real thinking, and short enough to finish before breakfast. Written “1k”, it is a writer’s shorthand.

Why “.gg”?

At the end of a long session, “gg” means good going: done for today. That is the only way we use it. 1k is not a game.

What counts as a word?

Any run of letters or digits. “Don’t” and “well-known” count once, and punctuation never counts. Languages written without spaces (such as Chinese or Japanese) are not counted accurately yet.

What if I miss a day?

Nothing happens. The day stays an open circle and tomorrow’s page is waiting. Your longest run is remembered, and your current run starts again.

Can I lose my pages?

Clearing your browser’s site data deletes them, as it would for any local app. Export a backup from the Data tab now and then; it takes one click.

Begin anywhere. Stop at a thousand.
